Story & Atmosphere
Located on bustling Fourth Avenue in San Diego, CLOSED - Tacos el Cabron delivers an authentic taco experience that resonates with both locals and visitors. This unassuming spot stands out not with flashy decor but by putting its heart into each dish. From the first bite, it’s clear the kitchen respects tradition while embracing bold flavors.
The breakfast bacon taco sets a high bar — expertly balanced, it melds smoky, savory notes with a flawless cook that wakes the palate. Their fish taco offers a lighter, fresher option with perfectly grilled fish that's never breaded, showcasing an earnest commitment to taste over flash. The shrimp taco, noted for its just-right spiciness, exemplifies the kitchen’s skill in layering flavors without overwhelming.
The carne asada tacos hold true to classic Mexican roots — tender, well-seasoned meat wrapped in warm tortillas that invite you back for more. Don’t miss the elote corn fries, a standout that has earned rave reviews for their tender kernels and rich, creamy seasoning. These small touches highlight how CLOSED doesn’t just serve food; it crafts memorable moments centered around genuine Mexican street fare.
Portions are generous and prices friendly, making it an ideal stop for casual dining that doesn’t sacrifice quality. The fresh, spicy burritos and the surf and turf bowl offer variety for those seeking heartier fare without dulling the flavors. Though the outdoor seating is simple, it allows diners to soak in the neighborhood vibe while enjoying their meal.
Service may sometimes feel rushed but remains warm and thoughtful, like when guests are offered complimentary drinks during busy times — a subtle sign of attention to customer experience. Overall, CLOSED - Tacos el Cabron feels like a hidden gem: unpolished but authentically delicious, it invites you to come as you are and leave satisfied.
“ For a taco shop this place is pretty good. I had a bacon breakfast taco and a fish taco. The breakfast taco was delicious. Solid mix of flavors and cooked well. Fish taco also had a decent mix of flavors, even if the fish wasn't of the highest quality but it's a taco shop not a fine dining restaurant. It was cooked perfectly though and not breaded. The outdoor area on the street was nice if a little rundown but that's typical of the area. Hard to keep patio areas pristine. Prices are just ok, a little high, but not out of the average at all compared to other places in the area. Decent portion size on the tacos. Would definitely recommend. Staff was extremely friendly. ”
“ We dined there around 3 PM on a weekday. Two tacos, one beef fries. Everything was tasty! Especially the shrimp taco was incredibly delicious! Just the right level of spiciness. We were almost the only guests and sat outside. Service was okay, not overly enthusiastic but friendly. The staff seemed a bit rushed. The atmosphere was mediocre. The outdoor area was unexciting, plain. Metal tables, no decoration, slightly unkempt. But okay. Cozy, however, is something different. ”
“ The food here is amazing and tastes very authentic! The service was awesome! The hostess/cashier offered us free drinks because our wait was so long, (only felt about 20 minutes and we did come in with a rush of people) which she did not have to do. We were happy to wait and the wait was worth it! I ordered a carne asada taco and tried to order the elote corn fries because they looked delicious, but was told that they didn't have them, so on the fly, I ordered the shrimp fries and they were the best fries I ever had. The were so good and seasoned perfectly! The carne asada was delicious I didn't want to share half with my wife! 10/10, would recommend ”
“ We enjoyed our dinner here. It was fresh, delicious and a bit spicy. We loved the spice and the portion size. We had a burrito, churros and surf and turf bowl. Everything was freshly made after ordering and it is so affordable! ”
“ tucked in-between the "hey look at me" restaurants, you might pause, like we did, and question "is this the right place?" the answer is a resounding YES. The food was amazing. easily the best burrito I've ever had (shrimp). the elote fries were tremendous. salsas super tasty. if i didn't live 2,500 miles away, this would be a regular stop for me. don't hesitate. go. go now. ”
